Lines On Fingernails? What Does It Mean

Lines On Fingernails

What are those ugly Lines on the fingernails?

What do they mean to your health? After a lot of testing, we find there is a low, uncommon chance that these ridges may indicate an underlying medical condition or maybe even a trauma to the nails. But it’s totally natural for most of us as we age to see them get more noticeable particularly if you have dry skin or skin conditions like eczema.

But still, why are they there? They are essentially like nail wrinkles. As we age, the nail matrix slowly starts to lose its effectiveness in certain areas causing the nails to grow irregular, resulting in what we see as lines or ridges extending from the cuticula all the way up to the nail tip.

However, there are certain deficiencies that can also cause these ridges or make them worse if your body is low in protein, zinc, calcium, or vitamin A, those irritating vertical ridges on your nails will often indicate a deficiency. If you have deep bridges or any other health problems, getting a blood test to check for possible deficiencies would not hurt.

More troubling are deep horizontal ridges or depressions, known as Beau’s lines. They mean something that momentarily caused the nail to stop growing. Triggers may include high fever, chemotherapy, severe illness, major operation, blood transfusion, car accident, or any major system stress. When you’ve endured several episodes of stress you may have a sequence of parallel Beau tracks.

Action course: If you can not connect your deep horizontal ridges to a specific event in your life, ask your doctor what could be the cause.

Usually, vertical ridges are just a part of ageing. Do not buff, but use a ridge filler if you wish to cover them up.

How to minimize the presence of vertical ridges on the fingers

First of all, the best way to help lessen the presence of those lines is to ensure that your hands and fingers are moisturized with the thick cream, oil or petroleum jelly during the day, and pay special attention to your cuticles.

Basically, handle your nails with your wrinkles just as you do.

These are some tips on how to get rid of those lines on your fingernails
