Jaggery is a sweetener which is obtained by extracting cane juice, and extracting palm juice in some countries. When the juice has been drained, it is poured into large containers, so any unwanted sediments can settle and be filtered to create a clear liquid. After that, the juice is put in a flat-bottom pan where it is boiled, and what we know as gur or jaggery is the resultant product. While it is a natural sweetener, it has other benefits that make it a suitable winter-time snack.
Jaggery produces heat in the body first and foremost, and helps to regulate body temperature. It has a high calorific value that keeps our body warm and gives energy. This jaggery quality also helps combat diseases such as flu and common cold, as higher body temperatures are less conducive to microbial development. Jaggery is also filled with lots of minerals such as iron, magnesium, zinc, selenium and potassium, which strengthen the immune system and help keep infections at bay.
Jaggery is also ideal for symptoms linked to the throat such as dry cough, sore throat, or scratching, by forming a crust on the throat’s inner lining. Jaggery dilates the blood vessels in the area to tackle respiratory problems such as a cough or congested lungs, allowing more blood to circulate, thereby producing warmth in the respiratory tract. A similar feature of gur is that it purifies blood by keeping the total number of haemoglobins and eliminating any unnecessary substances. However, it is suggested that jaggery be eaten in moderation, as it is slightly higher in calories, containing up to 4 kcal / gram. People who are diabetic or adopting a weight loss diet should control their jaggery intake, as this may lead to weight gain and blood- levels fluctuations.

Respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchitis etc. can be treated if the jaggery is regularly eaten with sesame seeds.
