Side Effects of Drinking Alcohol

Having a drink at the end of a long day or to celebrate an occasion is a treat for many. However, it becomes a problem when one drink casually turns into two, three, or maybe even four – and on a daily basis. Here are Some Side Effects of Drinking Alcohol Every Day.

Moderate alcohol consumption for women is described as having up to one drink per day, according to the CDC. It’s up to two drinks for men. Keep in mind, though, this isn’t intended as an average over several days. Many that drink 8-15 drinks per week (or more) are considered heavy drinkers, and this lifestyle can lead to many serious health problems.

Below, you’ll see just five dangerous side effects that you drink alcohol in excess and regularly can pose on your health.

After drinking alcohol on a regular basis, you might…

Develop heart problems

Those who chronically drink are more likely to have heart-related problems than those who do not drink. The risk of developing heart disease is much higher in women who drink regularly than for men.

Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to myriad poor health outcomes, including heart problems such as high blood pressure, heart failure, and even stroke.

Moreover, drinking alcohol on a daily basis will cause you to put on extra pounds, which can also have a negative impact on heart health. Alcohol is a source of excess calories and a cause of weight gain that can be harmful in the long term.

Be at risk of infertility

It’s common knowledge that pregnant women should not drink as it could raise the risk of premature delivery, miscarriage, fetal alcohol syndrome disorders (FASD) or stillbirth. What many do not know, though, is that females who drink too much may have problems getting pregnant.

One research, which found 6,120 females between the ages of 21-45, found that those who consumed at least 14 alcoholic beverages a week (about two drinks a day) were 18% less likely to conceive than those who drank less or did not drink at all.

Develop Osteoporosis

An analysis of six studies published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence unveiled a strong association between alcohol consumption and osteoporosis – a bone disease that occurs when either the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or a combination of the two. Basically, the more alcohol you consume daily, the higher risk you have of developing the bone disease.

More specifically, osteoporosis was 1.63 times more likely to occur in people who drank two drinks or more per day. This is because heavy drinking can inhibit the absorption of nutrients, like calcium and vitamin D, that are critical for bone health.

Russell T. Turner, Ph.D., a researcher at the Skeletal Biology Laboratory at Oregon State University, said to CreakyJoints, “We know that alcohol abuse has detrimental effects on bone health, what we don’t know is how much of the effect is alcohol directly on bone versus the other comorbidities that occur with alcohol abusers.”

For example, Pancreatitis, diabetes, and liver disease, may play a role in osteoporosis, all of which are negative health outcomes that are associated with heavy drinking.

Start having slurred speech all the time

People who drink regularly are at risk of developing dysarthria, which is the medical term for difficulty saying words, according to the American Addiction Centers. There are many conditions that can cause this change in speech, such as brain injury, brain tumor, and stroke… just to name a few. However, heavy drinking over time can cause damage to the brain and make dysarthria permanent.

Experience liver damage

Perhaps one of the most well-known effects of excess drinking is liver damage. The liver is responsible for breaking down and removing harmful substances and toxins from your body.  However, regularly drinking alcohol (and a lot of it) can disrupt this all-important process, and it can also increase your risk of chronic liver inflammation and liver disease.

Liver disease can result in toxins and waste building up in your body, which can be life-threatening.

In conclusion, you can drink alcohol if you want, just do so in moderation so you can dodge poor health outcomes.
